Clogs inside the house are cleared the same way on both systems. The difference matters when the problem is beyond the house: a septic tank is pumped by an authorized septic service, and the public main is handled by the utility for your address. This guide helps you place the problem and pick the right call.
How do I know if my house is on septic or sewer?
- Check your water bill. A “sewer” charge means the house is connected to the public system. A septic home does not pay that charge.
- Look for yard clues. Tank lids, a mound or a distinct patch of lawn can mark a tank and drainfield. Connected homes usually have a cleanout running toward the street.
- Check county records. Property permits and the county health department record septic systems. On a recent purchase, the inspection report usually says.

What do we handle on a septic home?
