Bathroom sink not draining with the stopper open?
A part that will not open and water that will not leave are different problems. Identify the mechanism before pulling, turning or removing anything.

- Stopper
- Basin outlet
- Trap and drain
What happens. Where it happens. What you tried.
Is the stopper stuck, or is the drain blocked?
These are different observations. A stopper that will not open needs its mechanism identified; if it is already open and water remains, describe the drainage. Do not force it by pulling or turning to test it.
The stopper will not open
Identify a lift rod, push button or grid. Find the model instructions or manufacturer support before removal.
It is open, but water stays
Leave the faucet off. Review the safety conditions before cleaning accessible debris; retained water does not locate the clog.
The mechanism is unfamiliar
Leave connections intact and keep any identification already available. A product photo or the manual can help identify it.
Construction and servicing vary by model. Moen: bathroom drain types. This guide does not offer a universal removal sequence or confirm a stopper-mechanism repair service.
How do I identify a bathroom sink stopper before removing it?
Moen distinguishes lift-rod, push-button and grid designs; overflow arrangements also differ. Identify the model before removal: turning or pulling is not a universal release method. Moen identification.
Compare stopper mechanisms
- Lift rod behind the faucet
- Delta’s example uses a horizontal rod to retain the stopper. Do not yank it free; use the matching instructions. Delta example.
- Push-button top
- Dearborn Universal Pop Down has a lift-out cleaning feature. That does not mean every push-button stopper lifts out. Specific design.
- Grid or unfamiliar design
- A visible grid is not permission to pry. If you cannot identify the removable part, find the model before touching connections.
This comparison identifies the mechanism; it does not diagnose the blockage.
How do you clear hair from a bathroom sink drain?
- Leave the faucet off.Wait for standing water to drain away. Do not loosen connections under retained water or chemicals; a towel or bucket does not remove that restriction.
- Release only the permitted part.Follow the model manual. If it requires a rod or nut you cannot confidently reassemble, leave the assembly intact.
- Remove visible debris. With gloves, wipe accessible hair and residue from the removable part. Put debris in the trash rather than pushing it down the pipe. Surface cleaning.
- Refit and check.Refit according to the manual. Briefly try a small flow; stop if water collects or a leak appears. Do not refill the basin to demonstrate the problem.
Can you use a plunger on a bathroom sink?
Only while the starting conditions still hold and the outlet is unobstructed for the cup. Do not force a fixed stopper to make room. Water must be low and stable, with room to insert the tool without overflowing.
- Prepare the seal.Use just enough water to cover the cup base. Center it over the drain and cover the actual overflow opening with a cloth. Do not stuff the cloth deep inside or cover an unidentified opening.
- Use a few gentle strokes.Push and pull gently while keeping the seal, then pause. Stop for splashes, leaks, rising water or water at another fixture.
- Remove the cloth and observe.Only if the level drops and conditions remain safe, briefly check with a low flow. Stop if water collects again. Do not repeat without improvement or add drain cleaner.
Reference: cup and overflow. Stop if water rises, leaks appear or the clog does not improve.
Bathroom sink still clogged after cleaning the stopper?
One slow bathroom sink does not prove a main-sewer blockage. A previously cleaned trap does not prove a vent problem either. Record what you have already observed; do not run other fixtures to provoke a reaction.
- One basin or both: note which started first; sharing a vanity does not establish where they connect.
- Other fixtures or units: describe where water appeared and coordinate shared access with management where needed.
- Recurrence: note when it was cleared, which part or line was worked on and how long normal drainage lasted.
A blockage beyond accessible parts needs suitable access. Trap disassembly requires matching instructions and competence to reassemble and check for leaks; there is no universal sequence here. Keep the names of any products used for the assessment.
