An unexplained rotten-egg smell does not identify a drain problem. If gas is possible, use the route above. Odor and water flow are separate observations; this page cannot identify a gas or diagnose a pipe.

How does a dry trap let sewer smells into a house?
Two transparent traps: one retains water in its bend; the other is dry.
  1. Water retained: a barrier in the bend.
  2. Water lost: a possible gas pathway.

Sewer smell in the house but no backup?

Sewer smell in the house: what should I do?

Use observations you already have. Do not perform tests to fit a category.

Possible gas or uncertain source

Odor strength does not rule out a leak. Follow the leave-first guidance.

One unused, normally draining fixture

After any possible gas concern is addressed, review the conditions for the limited water step. It is not a building-safety test.

Recurring odor, several locations or a known leak

This includes odor already noticed near a toilet base: arrange a qualified plumber or building assessment. Do not push the toilet or move closer to sniff.

Visible sewage backup

Stop using affected fixtures and stay away from wastewater. Coordinate with management or the utility serving the address. Contacts and responsibilities.

Oatey describes possible toilet-seal, vent and pipe issues; these are assessment categories, not conclusions from smell. Oatey · City wastewater guidance.

Sewer smell after rain, laundry or a toilet replacement?

After any possible gas concern has been addressed, choose the event you already noticed. Timing helps organize the assessment; it does not confirm the cause.

Why does it smell like sewer after heavy rain?

Stormwater entering through sewer defects can overload a sanitary system, according to EPA. That does not show that an indoor smell comes from a clog or identify the responsible line. Report whether you noticed it indoors or outdoors and whether water also backed up. EPA.

If you already saw a public overflow, keep away and notify the provider serving the address. How to choose the contact.

Why is there a sewer smell after running the washing machine?

The timing does not distinguish the appliance from a trap or drain-vent issue. Note where you noticed it, the part of the cycle and whether water appeared outside the machine. Traps and venting are possible assessment areas, not a diagnosis of your washer. Oatey.

Do not repeat a cycle to recreate the smell. If water also comes back out of a drain, use the washing-machine drain backup guide.

Sewer smell after replacing a toilet?

Ask the installer or a qualified plumber to review the recent installation, including its seal. Oatey describes how installation problems can let sewer gas escape near the base. Smell after replacement does not prove the seal failed or that another toilet is needed. Oatey.

Share the work date and any leak already observed. Do not rock the toilet, dismantle the seal or move closer to sniff.

Can a dry drain trap cause a sewer smell?

A trap retains water as a barrier to sewer gases. In an unused drain, that water can evaporate. South Davis Sewer District explains why replenishing water can restore that barrier. Trap explanation · Oatey.

Only after any possible gas concern has been addressed: a known, isolated, unused drain that normally drains. There must be no fumes, exposure symptoms, drain chemicals, sewage, leaks, standing water or backup. If any condition is unknown, do not attempt this step.

  1. Use plain water only.Briefly use the fixture’s normal flow, without oil, cleaners or other products. Do not open cleanouts or dismantle parts.
  2. Stop for an adverse change.Stop the water if it rises, leaks appear or the odor worsens. Do not keep filling or test other fixtures for comparison.
  3. If it persists or returns, arrange assessment.A change in smell neither confirms the cause nor declares the whole property safe. Describe the result to a qualified plumber.

Stop if water rises, leaks appear or the smell worsens; a change in smell does not confirm the cause.

What should I tell a plumber about a sewer smell?

For a non-emergency assessment, prepare a description of what already happened. Do not hunt for the smell by moving your face closer, entering confined spaces or going onto the roof. You do not need to reproduce the problem to ask for guidance.

  • Where you noticed it: room or fixture, without guessing which pipe is responsible.
  • When it started and whether it returns; whether it followed rain, laundry or a toilet replacement, or the fixture had been unused.
  • Whether normal use showed ordinary drainage, slow flow or backup.
  • Any already-known leaks or recent work, and products that were applied.
  • Whether management already knows of shared-area problems; omit neighbors’ personal information.

A sink draining well does not locate the odor source. Several slow drains do not, by themselves, determine which line or provider is responsible.

Will drain cleaning fix a sewer smell?

Drain clearing is for a confirmed drainage problem; smell alone does not establish a clog. It does not automatically call for a camera or hydro jetting. Access and assessment determine whether clearing is appropriate.

Gas work, vent or seal repair, and sewage cleanup are not offered here. Use the appropriate provider or coordinate with building management for those needs.
