Shower drain clogged but no hair visible?
A shower can remain clogged when the blockage is below the visible grate or in a connected drain. Removing surface hair does not clear every part of the line. Water backing up when another fixture runs needs a connected-line assessment.

Can I clear the shower drain myself or do I need drain service?
Rising water, drain chemicals or several fixtures backing up change what is safe to try. Answer these four questions before attempting to clear the clog.
Answer all four questions to see a next step.
Stop adding water
Stop running the shower or adding water to the affected drain. Ask for help and say that the water is rising or spilling.
Pause cleaning attempts
Drain cleaner may be present. Do not plunge or add or mix products. Tell the person responding what was used, or that you do not know.
Notify building management
Report which units or shared areas are affected. Confirm who can authorize access and work before anyone intervenes on a shared line.
Arrange an assessment of the affected fixtures
Describe which fixtures in the home are affected. These symptoms alone do not locate the blockage or prove a main-line problem.
Get an assessment before trying more
Some information is still uncertain. Pause attempts to clear the blockage until the conditions and an appropriate next step are clarified.
Avoid forcing the object
Do not force the object farther in or repeat attempts that could move it. Explain what may have fallen in so its removal can be assessed.
Review this guide’s basic steps
Your answers do not flag the risks above. Review the basic steps and their limits. If conditions change or you become unsure, stop and request an assessment.

How do you unclog a slow-draining shower?
Limit a basic household check to one shower with no sewage, drain chemicals or symptoms elsewhere. Stop using it while water is accumulating.
- Identify the removable part. Check the grate brand or manual. Some lift with a key; others use screws. Do not turn the drain body or loosen sealed connections.
- Remove only accessible debris. With gloves, clear hair and residue from the grate or removable basket if you can do so without touching contaminated water. Do not force a tool into an unseen pipe.
- Reassemble and observe. Refit parts according to the manual. Once standing water is gone, briefly test a small flow and stop if it collects. If drainage remains slow, arrange an assessment.

Shower still clogged after removing hair?
Removing visible hair does not tell you where the remaining problem is. If water is still standing, leave the shower unused and arrange an assessment; do not force a tool farther in.
What you already removed
Describe the grate, basket or debris you reached, without assuming the whole pipe was cleared.
What changed
Say whether water stayed the same, dropped partly or returned during an earlier normal use. Do not run the shower again to test it.
What else to report
Any product applied and symptoms already noticed at other fixtures or units. Say when a detail is unknown.

How are toilet and shower drains connected?
A shower has its own trap and may join a branch that also receives the toilet discharge. A blockage beyond that connection can affect both fixtures. The exact layout depends on the building.
- Grate or basketVisible, accessible debris
- Shower drainPipe and trap below the floor
- Connected lineMay serve other fixtures
If other fixtures are backing up too, stop using them and call to have the shared line checked.
Why does flushing the toilet make the shower back up?
A blockage in a connected drain can send toilet wastewater back through the shower. The connected line needs assessment. It does not by itself prove a blockage in the public sewer main or at the shower grate. Stop using affected fixtures and describe the pattern without triggering another flush to demonstrate it.

Drano did not work. What now?
If Drano did not clear the drain, cleaner may still be present. Do not plunge or mix in another product. Tell the technician which product you used, when, and whether water remains.
